i do think there could’ve been more to make me hate Pfeff, yes he does horrible things but i think i needed more anger from Carries side to really feel the emotions. This book doesn’t have a jaw dropping twist but it’s a sensitive psychological and realistic fiction that portraits an unforgettable dysfunctional family. The heroine of this book is the mother of one of the kids in WE WERE LIARS, only it's historical fiction because it takes place in the '80s (doesn't that make you shudder even more than the crime stuff did? i liked it anyway, but i think it would have been more fun to gasp in genuine surprise at the path it took.
She describes her migraines like they were the end of the world, which, I understand to some people they might be, but if you're getting a fucking migraine, there's really no bloody need to get all freaking poetic about it. She goes to visit the Liars at Cuddledown where they tell her that their deaths were not her fault (as they share responsibility) and reveal that they will no longer be able to appear to her, with Gat giving her a final kiss and the three of them diving into the ocean and disappearing. It felt like a really random story about a rich, white girl and her white girl problems, crying her white girl tears and I felt myself unsure about what the point of it all was. No matter where we go, we will always be able to line up on the roof of Cuddledown and gaze at the sea. Definitely a book that you pick up and don’t want to put down until you’ve fully solved just what on earth is going on.It's set in the 1980s, and all about rich people doing nothing, swimming and eating, basking in the sun and enjoying their heaps of money. i owe it to 14 year old me who was sobbing in her bedroom, clutching this to her chest and never wanting to let go.
