When I look back at my old specials, I always regret not cutting out more, so I made this grown-up decision to cut big chunks out that had really killed.

I’ve been talking to my friends about this, but we got married to this thing of shooting your special and then trying to get your next special out, and we were on this two-year turnaround. Segura has described interning at Kopelson Entertainment and then having his first paid job in the industry as a logger, producing transcripts of reality shows such as Extreme Makeover and My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss.Can you tell me a little bit about Fat Astronauts, the film project that you and Bert are trying to do together?

Fresh off his latest global tour, Segura hopped on the phone to talk about the new hour, his 4- and 7-year-old sons’ take on their father’s fame, his own Hollywood ambitions and how his Ted Cruz bit landed around the world. And then I took the oldest to school and somebody at the school had asked me to sign books [Segura published I’d Like to Play Alone, Please in 2022] and so I did.

Since then, he has made a lasting footprint in the comedy world with seven stand-up comedy specials.Because of the pandemic forcing that year to go to waste — and I still worked, doing rooftop shows, backyard shows — I ended up doing stand-up for another year, so this was a three-year turnaround. I wouldn’t say that women are coming up to me left and right [on their own], like, “Oh, I’m a huge fan.

Laughs] My friend said that when people bring me up to him, he pulls up the video of me breaking my arm and he goes, “Karma. Speaking of his kids, nobody on this planet pushes the boundaries about telling jokes quite like Segura.There’s something very fun, when you’re a comedian, about getting into a joke subject that you’re not supposed to.
