Afterwards I got more interested in the way Wim Hof can control his body and boost his immune system. I was especially curious about the physiology of it all. The book did not really satisfy that curiosity, they explain some parts but I will try to look for articles by researchers since I was not really convinced. The 1st of this book's 3 prologues quotes Jiddu Krishnamurti who said that "the cessation of thought is the awakening of intelligence". This quotes tells you lots about Wim Hof's pretensions: so long as you don't think too hard about what he says, he'll sound legit. Based on his DNA signature, Ötzi was part of the migration of Neolithic farmers that came through Anatolia (modern Turkey) 8,000 to 6,000 years ago, replacing Europe’s Paleolithic hunters and gatherers. His maternal genetic heritage no longer exists in modern populations, but his paternal line lives on in groups found on Mediterranean islands, especially Sardinia. What he wore

s naturally mummified remains are now stored in a cold chamber at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy. The museum receives about 10 to 15 requests by scientists each year to study Ötzi. Photograph by Robert Clark, Nat Geo Image Collection Who were his people? is, in my eyes, the best investigated human body the whole world has ever seen,” says Oliver Peschel, the Munich-based forensic pathologist in charge of Ötzi’s conservation.

This book feels very very bloated and there's so much that should have been cut out. What information we do get just feels very cliche. Even if it was important or novel, I didn't feel anything because I was bored to tears by the endlessness of some chapters that never go anywhere. Readers complain they would have wanted more concrete advice from Wim Hof besides questionably messianic claims that one can tap into one’s “cardiovascular system” or “immune system” (note how it is never clear when and how one boosts or suppresses said system). Here’s the thing. You will never get anything more concrete from the Man Himself. At this stage in his name brand development, you won’t get anything more either even if you sign up for one of the courses in Poland. You will get good training and oversight from one of his branded trainers, and the odd appearance of the Man himself for a long messianic and iconoclastic monologue. Don’t me wrong. Hof is a sincere, generous, inspiring, eccentric, disorganized genius. But if it weren’t for the marketing know how of his son, and — I will insist again — the very useful details provided by people like Justin, his teachings might have been lost on the world. After teaching specialized breathing techniques to SEALs for years, helping them focus, stay warm in the cold ocean and get centered in combat, I can attest to the authenticity and power of Wim Hof's methods. Wim Hof is providing a great service with his new book The Way of The Iceman by bringing breath training and simple, powerful health practices into mainstream consciousness.”--MARK DIVINE, US Navy SEAL (ret), founder SEALFIT, bestselling author of Unbeatable Mind and Way of the SEAL

Wim Hof is often presented as a freak of nature. If you’re flipping through the science channels, you might see a segment that shows him subjecting himself to extremely cold temperatures with no ill effects. This book is an attempt by Hof, and co-author Koen De Jong, to counter the proposition that he’s some sort of mutant (or—worse--that his demonstrations are cons) by offering a method by which anyone can achieve the same feats. It should be noted that long before Hof and YouTube came on the scene, there were people [notably Taoist and Tibetan Buddhist monks] performing similar acts. Having had a truly horrific childhood that did away with whatever humanity he had to start with, Richard was already a killer by the age of 13. Discovering a fearsome talent for murder he was already killing for sport by the time he was tapped to carry out contracts for various Mob families, and continued indulging in his hobby alongside his mob work leading to a truly terrifying trail of dead people behind him. The likes of Gacy and Bundy seriously have nothing on this guy. The book details how Wim Hof believes that cold therapy can affect the autoimmune system and improve the bodies immunity to illness. Wim believes that he can control his autonomic nervous system and the book details some studies and individual experiences that seem to demonstrate an improved immune response through the use of cold therapy and breathing exercises.

Compiled from hundreds of hours of interviews, while it's contents are sensational this never felt sensationalised and was instead written in an matter-of-fact, unhistrionic way with the author's voice never becoming intrusive, quietly putting you firmly in Kuklinski's shoes and giving you a picture of all the sides of the man, not just the killer. In the hours before his death, Ötzi had a hearty meal of einkorn wheat, red deer, and ibex. It took researchers 18 years to identify his stomach—via a 2009 CT scan—because the organ had shifted under his ribs to where his lower lungs are located. Very interesting read content-wise, but unfortunately it was poorly written. It appears to be written for a non-scientific audience (or; at least one that doesn't read books often..), but I'd expect people who choose to read this work are interested in personal development and the functionings of the human body; which makes the easy writing redundant. Reading The Ice Man left me cold, perplexed, horrified. No one today writing about the criminals, the streets, has the insight and innate knowledge of the criminal mind. I highly recommend this book.” — Joey Reynolds, host of WOR Radio stars rounded up. This was my second true crime book by this author within the past month and I’ve really enjoyed them both. I got through this in two days which is very fast for me. It’s the story of Richard Kuklinski, aka The Iceman, an extremely brutal and violent man. The stuff this guy did is grotesque and gruesome in the extreme and is sometimes outlined in graphic detail and is therefore not for the faint-hearted. So there’s my trigger warning - those of you who don’t like blood, guts and gore should avoid this book. Plus there’s a considerable amount of domestic violence as his poor wife Barbara and his kids often suffered from his foul moods and temper whilst at the same time being unaware of his life of crime.

The Ice Man book by Philip Carlo - ThriftBooks

The spirit of Wim has fascinated me since I first heard of him. He clearly thinks in a different way than the average person. I believe he just chooses not to see limits, and if he wants to achieve something, he simply decides he can and puts in the work without doubts, while following his inner guidance. The writing is really really bad, as the other reviewers have already pointed out. I almost turned down the book after the first few chapters, but kept on.... and I'm glad I did. As poor as the writing is, the stories of Wim Hof and Justin are inspiring, really inspiring. I motivated me to incorporate cold showers in my daily routine and enjoy the numerous health benefits that Wim Hof is an extreme example of (I mean, 39 bpm resting heart rate at more than 50? Controlling the autonomic nervous system consciously? That's something everyone should strive for). Apparently, for health reasons. Research into the Wim Hof method is minimal even now, 5 years after this book was published. What is known, without a doubt, is this: that Hof can increase his metabolic rate by ~300%, keeping him warm in freezing temperatures, and that he can control his autonomic nervous system, which was believed to be impossible, thus giving him resistance on demand to a specific endotoxin. These are impressive feats, to be sure, but increasing the metabolic rate to keep us warm is trivial--nowadays we can just wear more clothes or turn on the air-con--and the practical consequences of controlling the autonomic nervous system remain completely speculative. There’s a lot of front matter in this book (two forwards, a prologue, and an introduction), but the book more-or-less consists of seven chapters. The first of these is a mini-bio of Hof. It describes a fascinating event in Hof’s youth in which he was exposed to cold, as well as his travels to India in an attempt to find a yoga teacher. [As is the case with most people who come to India seeking to find that quintessential guru—i.e. a half-naked, weather-beaten, and forehead paint-streaked classical guru—he found that he had to wade through a sea of charlatans and shysters while never finding the true masters who are likely hidden away in caves in the Himalayas. Note: this is not to say that one can’t find excellent yoga instruction in India but it’ll likely be by someone fully-clothed and not someone smoking pot on a ghat in Varanasi.] This resulted in Hof taking an experimental approach in which he studied the effects of various activities on himself (and such experimentation is what he advocates for others as well.) It should be noted that Hof didn’t invent this method from scratch—e.g. the breath component is based on Tibetan Tummo meditation. Unfortunately, neither Wim nor Justin Rosales are good writers, and the quality of this book was nothing short of disappointing. The only reason I even gave it two stars was because of how impressive Wim's accomplishments are.

Carlo (The Night Stalker) has written another captivating true-crime book. This one tells the spine-chilling story of Richard Kuklinski, a.k.a. "the Ice Man" because he liked to freeze his victims to throw off forensic investigators. Born into an abusive family, Kuklinski claimed to have killed for the first time at age 14. After a run-in with the Gambino family, he became a hit man for the mob, managing to live the double life of a professional assassin and devoted family man. The author spent over 200 hours interviewing the incarcerated Kuklinski and his family. If one is to believe Kuklinski, he killed upward of 200 individuals, including Jimmy Hoffa, Carmine Galante, and Roy DeMeo. It was only through the diligent work of New Jersey police officer Pat Kane, who spent six years building a case against Kuklinski, that the killing spree ended. This work is written like a novel; readers will become so engrossed in the details that they'll forget that this is a true story. Highly recommended for readers of true crime; perhaps the finished version of this book will provide the update that Kuklinski died on March 5, 2006, at age 70 of natural causes. I am continuously searching for ways to expand my mind, body and spirit—Wim Hof and The Way of The Iceman have done just that! He shows us that human potential is limitless and we are ALL capable of anything we set our minds to.”‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Například, když se v příběhu objevila nová postala, tak hned po pár řádcích vyzvonil, jak se jejich vztah vyvine.

While hundreds of studies have already been done on Ötzi, more are in the works. Now that the Institute for Mummy Studies has sequenced Ötzi’s genome, they’re genetically analyzing his gut microbiome. “We would like to understand the whole community of bacteria that lived inside his stomach and his intestines,” says Zink. What Philip Carlo did was capture the heart and soul of Richard Kuklinski. I could not put his book down.” Great book about the Ice Man Wim Hof. I recently did a workshop to learn the breathing techniques used in this book, followed by an ice bath. It was out of my comfort zone but that's why I tried. Spine-chilling…readers will become so engrossed in the details that they'll forget that this is a true story.” — Library Journal
