About this deal

Panting is the doggy equivalent of sweating. If a dog cannot pant, it will be unable to reduce its body heat. It is therefore vital that soft muzzles are only used for very short periods and absolutely never in warm weather, or when your dog is already hot. To make it easier on the snout, people use vet wrap, adhesive foam, electrical tape, or glue moleskin/sheepskin to the inside of the muzzle where it rubs the nose. Baskerville Ultra Summary Review We would recommend the Baskerville Anti-Scavenge Muzzle (Sizes 1-10) as this includes an additional plastic guard at the end of the muzzle to prevent eating of food waste and other items like other dogs poo! Both the Baskerville Ultra and Anti-Scavenge Muzzles are suitable to use on your dog for the prevention of wildlife catching and scavenging. The Baskerville Ultra comes in six sizes, which supposed to fit dogs from a Maltese to a Bull Mastiff. Since this is a big scale, there are significant jumps between the sizes, so many owners find themselves in a situation where one muzzle is too small, but the bigger one is too big on their dog.

Dogs that are used to wearing muzzles are very comfortable with them. The best type of dog muzzle is the Baskerville muzzle – its open basket weave allows the dog to breathe freely. Other types of muzzles that completely close a dog’s mouth do not allow them to pant to lose heat. The Baskerville is available from vets and good pet shops. Touch the muzzle to your dog’s nose, and then instantly give them a treat. You want your dog to associate the muzzle with good things happening!A soft muzzle can be made from many different materials, but are usually some sort of fabric such as leather, mesh or nylon. They work by wrapping around your dog’s mouth and holding it closed. In a previous post, Why You Should Have a Muzzle For Your Dog (Even If It Doesn’t Bite), we explored the different situations in which using a muzzle would be invaluable, and occasionally even necessary (hint: it’s not always about aggression!). It appears that Dr Mugford has the same sentiment, as he believes “ muzzles have done more to protect owners and their dogs than legislation ”. In addition, he states that anyone who is unsure about how their dog will respond to a new or potentially stressful situation should think about employing the use of a muzzle.

There are several Facebook groups run by well-intentioned people who are telling dog owners to get these HUGE HUGE Muzzles. These folks claim these monster muzzles allow a dog room to pant. This advice is 100% incorrect. These huge muzzles come off too easily. If you have an aggressive or reactive dog, the last thing you want is for a muzzle to accidentally come off. Mark the hole you’ll be using with paint or nail polish to speed up the process of securing the muzzle. The pant room and the lengths are fine, but the muzzle still looks too big - especially since the two straps around her face are too long and are not adjustable, therefore the muzzle slides down when she drinks or sniffs.

How do you muzzle train your dog?

It was comfortable for the dog, a breeze to condition him to and inconspicuous on his dark face. He was able to eat, drink, pant and bark without any trouble, which meant it was safe to use during exercise and outdoor adventures. The three modes of securing were great reassurance that the muzzle would stay put and the choice of strong stainless steel hardware over plastic fasteners was icing on the cake. One of the biggest features that drew us to this muzzle was the generously sized front openings for the nose and bottom jaw. This was a crucial feature for two reasons: Examples of breeds correspond with their typical adult size. Bitches or young dogs may require a smaller size.

Please note: The muzzle must allow your dog to open its mouth so that it can pant. It should have 1cm clear from the end of the dog's nose. The breeds mentioned in the table are only recommendations since each dog has a unique snout shape which might differ from other dogs of the same breed. Other dogs are more fearful and timid, and can bite because they’re scared. This can commonly be the case in new surroundings, or in situations where they’re uncomfortable, such as at the vets. Consider adding neoprene to the inside of the muzzle at any points where it would rub against your dog’s nose, especially if you plan on muzzling her for more than half an hour. For its price-tag, the Baskerville Ultra easily stands out from its competition. It’s less expensive than the standard wire basket muzzle and much more comfortable, durable and secure than plastic basket muzzles we’ve tried in the past. While we didn’t use the head strap ourselves, we came across a number of people who claimed that extended use led to rubbing and sores on their dog’s face. It may be a good idea to leave it off if you think she’ll be wearing her muzzle for longer than half an hour.
