In short, it's a scriptural perversion to cite the destruction of Sodom as proof that God condemns homosexuality. The only criticism I could possibly have would be regarding Alberry’s counsel to pastors who find a homosexual couple attending their church. Christians, the church and the Bible seems to be out of step with modern attitudes toward homosexuality. is a quick and fairly easy read, and I would highly recommend it for all Christians so we can know how to love our gay friends and family, as well as for any sceptics who think that God is anti-gay.

It is a vivid and visible inclusion which foils much of his argument that the Scriptures speak in unison on the prohibitions against queer persons; at the very least, it counters this argument and demonstrates that there is not consensus, let alone scholarship that supports Allberry’s position. doesn’t do it all, but this is a superb introduction and a very strong example of compassionate, faithful, Gospel-centred engagement with one of the ‘live’ issues of our time. Update: My original review was written after reading a revised and expanded edition of the original 2015 published book. This is really true - the book doesn't really discuss any history at all, and also focuses largely on the people you'd expect - cis gay and lesbian people with strong relationships in the church. I would say this book is probably more targeted for believers than unbelievers, but there is something in it for everyone. There is a difference between an immature Christian who doesn’t yet understand the issues and a leader who is morally obligated to know better. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.

To be fair, at the end of his conclusion, Allberry does provide a direct (though brief) answer to the question posed by the title. Christians who want to explain the Christian faith to gay friends need to know that what the Bible says about homosexuality is not the only thing they need to explain, and it is probably not the first thing, or even the main thing, they need to focus on. After a preliminary chapter discussing marriage and sex within the Biblical text, Allberry devotes a chapter each to homosexuality and the Bible, homosexuality and the Christian, homosexuality and the Church, and homosexuality and the society. This was written before the more recent events and theological debates took place which made more people aware of how to parse some of the finer theological details addressed in this book.God is powerful enough to heal you and take away SSA but it’s not promised and should not be expected. This does not mean God does not love you if you have SSA because the Good news is open to all and this is a message of profound love and hope for all those lost because of sam sex attraction while wanting a relationship with Jesus. And Other Questions about Homosexuality, the Bible, and Same-Sex Attraction, Sam Allberry combines pastoral wisdom, authentic autobiography, and sound exegesis to provide Christians with a helpful introduction to the topic of homosexuality. Whether you’re wrestling with your own sexuality or just looking for answers on what the Bible really tells us about homosexuality, Is God Anti-Gay? Allberry clearly prefers the ESV translation, which includes narrow translations of the Greek where the NIV differs substantially.

While Allberry argues the individual may not be irredeemable after complete sexual rejection, he also states that the “same-sex attracted” individual’s sexual, relational, and connectional orientations are fundamentally irredeemable. Sam Allberry’s book addresses all of the common questions regarding homosexuality, looks at the applicable Bible verses, offers practical and helpful advice in how to love and share the gospel truths with believing and unbelieving same-sex-attracted people, and reminds us of grace and compassion so often missing from these discussions. Moore, Carl Trueman (author of The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self), and Jonathan Leeman (author of How the Nations Rage) all contribute one of those blurbs of praise at the beginning of this book which speaks to the solid theology found within. It is a short book (I read it in one sitting and I am a slow reader) but it is packed with wisdom and is very accessible. In this short, accessible book, Allberry briefly tells his story, presents the biblical case against homosexual behavior, and then offers wise counsel to Christians and churches dealing with this issue.Allberry’s argument is that homosexual relationships are not in line with God’s design for humanity, and therefore are not compatible with life in Christ. Explores the topic of homosexuality based on scripture, the gospel, and his own personal experience and full of truth and grace. However, alongside this caveat, Sam affirms that what the Bible does have to say about homosexuality is clear and important. I really struggle with the way LGBT people are preached about in churches, and I was worried this book would follow a similar vein of confusion, poor communication and a wistful longing for days gone by - when gay people weren't out and you could still slap your secretary on the bum without ramifications.
