About this deal

Shrinky dinks come in sheets that are white, clear and frosted. Print or hand colour them with paints, pencils and inks. Put them into the oven in a low-temperature oven for a couple of minutes, or use a heat gun to shrink them.

Depending on the size of your shrinky dink, heating and shrinking process will only take around 30 seconds to a minute with a heat gun, but it’s important to make sure all areas of the shrink plastic have fully shrunk to keep your shape flat, so we recommend heating for a full minute, move the tweezers around so that they don’t leave a mark on the area that you’re holding. If using an oven, we’d recommend baking for about 4 minutes before you take it out, and you can still watch the shrinking happening through the oven door! What if my shrinky dink is not flat? Kawaii Avocado Earrings // Cute Avocado Earrings // Best Friend Gift // Funny Earrings // Adorable Avocado Earrings During this entire process you should have clean, dry hands and clean dry work surfaces. Our kitchen always has chocolate somewhere so I do a thorough wipe of my benches beforehand and let the surfaces dry. Secure your shrinky dink with a skewer or tweezers on a heat proof surface like a ceramic tile or craft mat, and apply heat with your heat gun. Keep moving the heat gun nozzle over the whole area of the shrink plastic to make sure it is getting heated evenly and no areas becomes scorched. Alternatively, you can shrink in your oven instead.I shrink a maximum of 4 pieces at a time and have a book handy to do the final flatten out, although I find they are not too hot to touch to flatten out, the book is much more even than my fingers. Color one side of the shape with a permanent marker. The color becomes more intense once it shrinks. If you are wanting to attach your shape to something don’t forget to punch a hole before placing in the oven. Cut out the shape with scissors, keeping edges rounded – no sharp pokey bits. Remember to punch a hole if you plan to make a keyring or want to tie the shrinkie to something Shrink film. The print on one can also be drawn on. If you want to do both you can buy the printable one and draw on the offcuts. I use Grafix brand. If you use a different brand you will need to work on getting the shrink process right as they all perform differently. I set up all of my Shrinkies on cardboard pieces on an old table that no one else uses. Once the resin goes on you cannot move the pieces for at least 10-15 hrs. You also want to avoid dust getting on them.

For the draw on Shrinkies I used off cuts of Shrink film from other projects. For inkjet I used whole sheets. You can save your decent offcuts for making more things. Shrink film is great to play with and make little bits and pieces (more Instructables will be coming with details on how to make some other things with Shrink plastic). You could flatten your Shrinky Dinks more by pressing them flat with folded paper. However, this step may not be necessary. Thank you for the heads up about sanding shiney surfaces before colouring! I’m new to this. A few questions. Oven door open or closed? Bake paint side up? Will #1 plastic work? Thanks for your time. Designs that are long and skinny might not shrink correctly (will curl up and not straighten out). Shrink film likes to be cut fairly evenly. I'd move to more irregular shapes once you are confident with the process. Leg Lamp Acrylic Earrings, Christmas Earrings, Holiday Jewelry, Holiday Gifts, Movie Art Earrings, Movie Lover Gift, Cute Dangle EarringsThere are two types of Shrink Film to choose from; the one your print on (with your inkjet) and the one you draw on (with permanent markers and colouring pencils). I use Shrink Plastic to make jewellery and other cute little things. Shrinkies are a lot of fun for all ages (help kids with the oven, though) and are only limited by your imagination!

Draw your design on the plastic, using permanent marker. It’s best with this kind of plastic not to use colored pencils.

Shrink Art is an easy and safe craft activity. We often get asked “How do you do shrink art” or “What is shrink art?”. Here’s everything explained. How to do Shrink Art, Like Shrinky dinks Doris Hajewski, " Shrinky Dinks founder hopes to sell toy business", The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 27, 2008. The take around 2-3 minutes to shrink and can flip over in the process. They curl up during shrinking, so don't be worried if they do this they should soon go flat in the oven.

Close the oven and watch them. The first few times you do this I recommend keeping a good eye on them so you can see what they do.
