About this deal

The damage had gone through at least two layers of carbon, so I decided to use three layers on the repair. For a 'typical' repair you would often us a piece of cloth about 150mm wide and 150mm long which means you can get about 6 repairs out of the piece of fabric included. I have worked with epoxies before and after looking on Youtube it does not look like rocket science. The carbon fibre used in today’s modern bicycles offers very good tensile resistance, enabling to produce light and tough frames, but it is inherently not good on impacts.

Predator Cycling suggests using plastic wrap to protect the rest of the frame, and if I had any at home, I would have used it instead of the painter’s tape. Clean up any resin that has dribbled through to the outside of the repaired pole using abrasive paper. You will only require approx 50ml of mixed Epoxy to fully use the supplied Carbon Fibre- This will leave extra resin for a further GLOSS coat should you wish.If you're using the kit to make a cosmetic repair then it would be necessary to protect the resin by painting over it using either a clear or pigmented UV resistant paint. With a very high strength-to-weight ratio, it delivers a high degree of rigidity and versatility in the repair of damaged structures. The kit includes all of the necessary materials and equipment to repair a carbon fibre fishing pole. This highlights the importance of ensuring a high-quality laminate and the adequate repair in the event of a defect. Before I rolled out the fabric for cutting, I cleaned my workbench, put away any unnecessary tools, and laid down a large, clean piece of cardboard.

My question is, are the home repair kits with woven carbon fabric safe and effective for the patient and diligent? Whatever you get make sure it is marketed as a laminating epoxy with UV resistance if it is for the frame. Providing the damage is not too extensive, such as in your case, and you understand and follow the process properly then there is no reason why you can't use this kit to repair a small area of damage on a carbon bike frame. I’ve got a lovely super light Scott frame with a crack all the way round a chain stay right next to the cable stop. This kit has been designed to allow for the repair of at least 3 broken fishing rods and so includes sufficient heat shrink tape, resin and carbon fibre fabric to do at least 3 repair jobs. Race track days and sailing competitions necessitate the repair patches to bond to the damaged structure without the need for an autoclave or a vacuum bag, although the latter may be more accessible.

You likely already found out that epoxies are certainly not equal in the field and there is a huge variety in the market tackling different things and many can and will do the job well enough, but frame repair shouldn't be something you have to repeat every few years.Ruckus is one of the only companies that focuses solely on carbon fiber repair, and despite the fact that its employees have 10 years of experience and combined backgrounds in rocket-building, mechanical engineering, and material physics, even they won’t touch some parts of a bike, including forks, handlebars, stems, and seat posts. I assume you mean an external rather than internal cable stop, in either case Bearback’s advice above sounds sensible to me. Place the trimmed carbon fibre fabric into place and apply the epoxy mixture to it using a brush or equivalent. It is ideally suited for carbon fibre repairs such as Car bodywork, fishing poles kayak and canoe race craft. The Carbon Fibre Rapid Repair Kit combines this advanced resin system with carbon fabric and all the necessary ancillaries to make an instant repair to a damaged carbon fibre or composite vehicle, boat, plane or piece of equipment.

I don’t think that warrants a full wrap of carbon around the tube as it looks pretty superficial to me. Considering that the original tube probably uses predominantly undirectional carbon fibre in its construction, depending on the nature of the damage, you may even choose to add still more thickness to compensate for the fact that the carbon fibre kit is woven and not unidirectional and therefore adds only half its strength in the direction of the original fibre. KIT INCLUDES: 2x2 Twill 3K Carbon Fiber Cloth that is 36" x 6”, 4 oz of Clear Epoxy Resin, and 4 oz of Clear Epoxy Hardener. The Peel-Ply is used when the finished repair needs to have a fine textured surface finish (ideal for bonding to) it is used as the last layer on the repair and is torn off after the resin has cured. In such instances, cracks may occur which involve both fibre and matrix damage as well as delamination, resulting from impact, but also excessive loading . Instructions: The repair kit will come with detailed instructions that guide you through the repair process. Matrix cracking often occurs with this type of delamination and results from the subsequent differences in the properties of each layer. Once I was satisfied with the sanding, I thoroughly cleaned the frame with alcohol and a lint-free cloth. But imagine this: You’re bombing down some monumental descent on an 800-gram race bike at 40 mph with nothing but a thin ribbon of gravel between you and a sheer drop.
