Description
Overall this table is great. The pattern creation truly is mesmerizing to watch and helps to calm your mind after a long day. It helps you to put down your phone and focus on one thing for a while, and it doesn’t get boring at all! The lighting is really fun and I love the spectrum of colors and effects available. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to add a functional piece of art to their life, that is both a conversation starter and a homeopathic tool to help improve their overall wellness.
I am extraordinarily satisfied with this new addition to my home. It is not only art but also wellness. The table is designed to boost mood, inspire creativity, enhance focus, and increase relaxation, which I can agree does it all. I am so thankful to own this statement piece that invites serenity. The HoMedics Drift Sandscape Kinetic Sand Table is a hypnotizing way to bring more mindfulness into your everyday life. With dozens of intricate patterns to choose from and lighting that seems to pulsate and breathe, it’s easy to find yourself staring contentedly at the Drift, letting your mind wander as it sorts through your thoughts. In terms of size, I chose the 16 inch and am glad. It fits nicely on a rectangular coffee table. For me the 21 inch would be way way too big. However, I could see turning the 21 inch into it's own end table. But unless you have a specific spot that can fit the larger one, I would recommend the 16 inch. For the generating and feeding the designs to the Sand Table to draw them, I started out by making my own "movement plans" by hand. I used some movement plans that were generated by Tom Dilatush in his GitHub project JSysiphus. The Sand Table uses (theta, rho) coordinates for movement, so I converted .thr files to .txt and placed all of the files in the "pending" folder of the repository, so that python can easily read them. The "read_files.py" program then converts the coordinates to simple number of steps and speed commands for the stepper motors to perform. The HoMedics Drift meditation sand table has been one of the coolest decorative items I’ve ever owned! It’s decor with function and the function is to captivate and soothe your mind. I know they call it a table, and you can rest a drink on it or set other decorative items on it for display, but I prefer to think of it as additional lighting, more of a low profile lamp with some really great features!
At first I put the Drift table onto a large wooden bowl, on the floor of my living room. The bowl raised it up from the floor and acted as a pedestal. It actually looked really cute and makes me think HoMedics should sell a few different types of stands for this, for those who want that option. After a couple weeks, and a few dog toy drops onto the surface of the table, I decided to move it onto my curved Umage cabinet where the round Drift table fits nicely onto the surface of the cabinet. It almost looks like they were made for each other. Plus it adds just the right amount of adjustable lighting to that corner of the room. I love it! The Drift is perfect for anxious individuals or those experiencing stressful situations who need help quieting their minds. Even if they don’t feel they have the time to stop and watch each sandscape being made, the Drift’s soothing whirring settles the noisy corners of your mind. I was surprised to find that, when I was testing the Drift, visitors to my home would request that it be turned on. Despite saying that it seemed silly or unnecessary the first time they watched it, they were drawn in over and over again in subsequent visits. I honestly don’t even think they realized they were doing it, but the Drift encouraged them to take a few moments to just be quiet, thoughtful, and mindful. Drop in T-nuts (I would suggest definitely getting some M5 T-nuts and any other sizes that you want)Clone the Sand-Table GitHub repository: git clone https://github.com/RGroza/Sand-Table.git app controlled: choose from hundreds of different types of mesmerizing pattern designs and ambient lighting color options, set your speed, or create a custom playlist, all from your phone and the easy-to-use app Within the first day of use, I had tapped play on close to a dozen designs. It's addicting to watch the little sphere roll around and make intricate patterns come to life. HoMedics positions the device as one for wellness. Watching it is supposed to promote mindfulness and a calming feeling. I can see how Drift could do that for some people. For me, it was much less about a calming presence and more about a neat piece of decoration. It's modern and simple enough to blend in, but with its light, it can be as attention-grabbing as you want it to be. There are hundreds of patterns available on the Drift. Some of them have messages like “#1 Dad” or “You are loved”, while others are symbolic of our favorite holidays with a Christmas Tree and a Thanksgiving turkey available. I really hope they expand upon these message and holiday type patterns which give it that extra personal touch. Another cool future feature would be the ability to create your own limited space, text only, message patterns, which is totally doable with some additional programming. Maybe we will see that in a future update or release. It took roughly 5 minutes to set up the table. I added the sand, used the rake to level it, dropped the ball into the center, and powered it up. It immediately began a "cleaning" cycle, meaning it produced what appeared to be a coil, the purpose of which is apparently to further spread and level the sand. Then it began creating designs.
I put Drift next to a record player, and it paired nicely with this old way of listening to music. At first, I set Drift’s light to pulse and change colors every 60 seconds. The novelty of that lighting combination wore off fast, but I did find that changing the lighting color and hue does have a real effect on how the patterns look and the feelings they produce. After some time, I found myself gravitating toward a warm light hue for most uses.I put Drift next to a record player, and it paired nicely with this old way of listening to music. I have been looking at a similar product for several years but finding this one makes me glad that I never pulled the trigger on buying the other manufacturer's version.
