In an effort to address the unrepeatable presentness of the now, to escape some false and corrupting sense of identity, the speaker in Autumn Journal departs now and then to Greek but also to relevant Roman exempla of human experience and behavior.

In the autumn of 1953, MacNeice began work on a further discursive autobiographical work as a commentary on the time. They highlight the most glamorous “fancy lives of the few” (III) or the rare “luxury life” valued by those who live “As if to live were … / But a leap in the dark, a tangent, a stray shot” (XVII).In diaries, such a structure allows to attain simultaneity, a rapid succession, and a sense of exhilaration. But not a global film, more like a box office Irish movie that everyone wants to see, well, in this case, read. Dead Poets Live have gained a cult following at The Coronet Theatre for their vivid presentations of poetry, and Autumn Journal is a thrillingly intimate and powerful dramatic monologue. Nor am I attempting to offer what so many people now demand from poets – a final verdict or a balanced judgment. MacNeice was the son of a Church of Ireland (Anglican) cleric who had supported Home Rule in what would become Northern Ireland.

His answer, accepting the charge, but denying its inevitability is that `there is no reason for thinking that, if you give a chance to people to think or live, the arts of thought or life will become rougher’. Its appearance on an excellent recent edition of the Backlisted podcast gave me the impetus to get on with it.

Diario de otoño es un largo poema de estructura diarística dividido en veinticuatro secciones, escrito a finales de 1938. Autumn Journal conjures up this panorama of selves as it takes the course of conservation of both, his personal losses and deficits as well as gains, autumnal wastage and fruitage. It is a mixture of the personal and the public, as MacNeice evokes a lost relationship in a world that is slowly sliding into war.
